Summer Reading Project

Over the summer I read Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. All through-out the book there seems to be a reoccurring question on whether books are good or books are bad. In the beginning of the book the main character, Clay Jannon, is a big fan of paper because he just recently got fired from a job at a company that only ever used computers. Here is a quote from Clay at the beginning of the book to show his original impression of books, "My name is Clay Jannon and those were the days when I rarely touched paper.”  However, further into he book when he meets Mr. Penumbra, they tam up to uncover a secret that will change the world. To uncover this secret, they must use the art of technology.
The theme of this book is to not fight the world changing around us, but to move with it. I perfect example of this is at the last 40 pages of the book. In this section of the book, Clay and his girlfriend Kat put together a team of highly qualified Google employees to crack the code that will unleash the secret to immortality.
The following article is review on Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Boostore. I think tat it perfectly sums up the main idea and point of the book. I really liked how in the article it gives you the wonderfully wise words of Clay as he ends his story with a good quote.

Best Sellers post #1: Why do I Read?

Reading is a way for me to escape reality. It allows me to transport myself to another world. When I think of reading I usually immediately groan and sigh. But after I get started and get into it, I look up and see how much time has passed and I realize, “oh that wasn’t so bad.” Reading is a good way to pass the time and help you become more intelligent all at the same time.

Most people just think of reading as an alternative to watching TV. They think why waste my time reading when I can just flip on the TV and watch Modern Family. However, they don’t realize how much they are missing. You will always hear people say after they have watched a new movie that it was good, but not near as good as the book.

Other people, I assume, read to get away from the real world. To escape the hard times that they might be going through at that point in their life. I cannot really relate to this, but I am sure that there are many out there that can. I mostly read because it makes me feel like I am in a dream. George R. R. Martin once wrote in his book A Dance with Dragons,“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”
