Best Sellers post #3: Book 1 Project

Book 1 Project: Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Peculiar Park One Day Experience

We are presenting an idea that will extend the experience of this book for the fans. We are going to take you on an adventure for one day at the Peculiars Park. At this park you tell us what picture you want to recreate and we will help you recreate it. Try to be the first person to make us say, “You have stumped us.”  If you can stump us, we will send you for a whole day to the island where Ransom Riggs got the idea for this wonderful novel. You are probably thinking, obviously it is possible to do this stuff if the pictures were created. But we are going to recreate the pictures without digital editing. We will only be in one town a day and you must be a native of that town to participate.

In this book the pictures really add to the effect of the story. We thought it would be a fantastic idea if “..people mistook us for gods” (Riggs 254). The pictures help us to feel like the book is real right? So what if we can actually make the pictures come to life. Jacob did not feel as though he belonged until he was able to see his full powers in action. Therefore we figured that if you could feel as though you had powers, you might feel more connected with the book.  With powers like Emma’s and Olives, we see the pictures and immediately think, that is not possible, but what if we can make it possible. For example, if you wanted to try and recreate the picture on page 14 then we would bring you out a bolder and tell you to lift it above your head as we took your picture. Then you can compare it to the picture in the book and see yourself as a peculiar. You will have the chance to be amazed like, Jacob was. You can see yourself and others float in the air like Olive, eat bees like Hugh, or hold fire like Emma. How would you like to have your own “Our beautiful display” (Riggs 168). You could use the key facture in the book, the pictures, to help see the story in a whole new light, the light of real life. And if you win you will get to experience the full excitement and creep-factor that Ransom Riggs felt as he explored the island. Feel the “doorless doorway seemed to swallow me as I dove through it” (Riggs 102). See this video for Ransom exploring the island. Just remember that this is a limited time offer. We will only be in town for one day.

This experience will help you feel like you belong inside the loop. You can live a day at Miss Peregrine’s home. This experience will help the people who want more to be able to go into detail as to how the pictures were even made possible or how it feels to be a peculiar. Just imagine how cool it would be to float like Olive! This park also will allow you to stay connected with the author. It was Ransom Riggs who posted the video to youtube and you could follow him. He will for sure post more videos on not just this book, but also his new books. Maybe even Hollow City, the second book in the peculiar children series.

* Please note that our one day park is only intended to encourage the ideas of the book, not to wreck the concept or copyright the book. Before entering all participants must sign a safety waver.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs Update

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is a very exciting book. I can honestly say this is the fastest I have read a non-required book. It has only been a week and I am already well over half way done and for me, that is a huge improvement. I think that the pictures in the book really contribute to the mood and setting. All of the pictures are in black and white. This gives them a sort of creepy look which is also your intended feel for the setting. When the main character is first going into the old abandoned house it is all torn and burned, with the pictures inside. This adds to the mystery factor of the book. Also when you see the pictures they each contribute a different feel to the story. Some make you feel curious, scared, or happy. Some even make you think “awww”. But mostly they make you feel a sense of understanding. Most of the pictures come after a section of the book where Riggs talks about them. His words are very descriptive, but then adding the picture after it makes it feel real. The pictures make you feel like the story is true and make you peer over your shoulder after every chapter of the book.

Best Sellers post #2: What is a book?

A book is story time. When you were young and sitting on the carpet for story time did you go up and touch the book. Did the teacher pass the book around for you all to hold? Did you hate story time because you were not holding the book? This is how I view a book. I do not think it matters whether you read from a kindle or a paper-back book. Either way it is the story that you read not the texture or smell. I do not think that we should get rid of books but I do not think it should matter if you read from a kindle. It is your own choice what you chose to read from.

I agree with Joe Meno when he explains, “What I’ve come to acknowledge or slowly except is that the idea of the book is more important than the actual form it takes-the message, the content being more vital than the medium-“ When you buy a book, do you buy it because it feels interesting or it smells good? No, you buy a book because you are interested in the story. A book is a story that you read. It is your own story time. I like reading paper books, but I also enjoy my kindle. I can change the font, mark pages highlight things, search things, and it is a good learning tool.

It is not a requirement for students to have a kindle or e-reader, but it is also not a requirement that they don’t. It shouldn’t matter so much to people what others chose read their books on. I think people are trying too hard to regulate what you read from when honestly, who cares. As long as you are reading the story, the message, within the text.
I do not agree with Tom Piazza when he talks about how the weight of the book matters. About how the author put effort into how long the book is. But don’t you think still reading all the pages in the book; you will still see how much effort was put into making it so long. A book is still a book, no matter what you read it on.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Right now I am reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. There is one line from the book that i just found to be very important, "'But why can't they?' She narrowed her eyes at me for a moment and then shook her head. 'Forgive me. I continue to underestimate the breath of your ignorance'" (Riggs 206). I thought that  this quote was very helpful to me when learning more about the characters. This quote is an example of characterization because it gives you a trait of the main character. It says that Jacob is very ignorant. He keeps pushing the subject even though he does not know the half of it. It also helped me make a connection from him to me. Have you ever been ignorant? I feel that I am ignorant a lot. I never just except an answer. I always ask why not, even though I may not know all the facts or may not understand it as much as the person answering me. This helped me understand what the main character, Jacob, was thinking when he asked why not.
